Ospedale Civile Maggiore Borgo Trento, OCM (IT)

In its current state the OCM Verona is worn down and no longer satisfies the demands of a functional modern healthcare facility which comply with the ever growing demands for good and efficient public service. Therefore, the local government of the Veneto region has initiated a major renovation and enlargement project which involves approximately 100.000 m2 of building area

In realizing this renovation it is very important for the city of Verona that the OCM Verona becomes a good example of energy conciousness and sustainability, where architecture, landscape and environment are naturally integrated in the overall design

The primary parts of the renovation and enlargement will be the construction of 2 new buildings. The 7 storey main building, the “Polo Chriurgico”, and the underground facility, “Piasha Servizi” which primary holds the laboratory facilities.

Aim

Throughout the renovation and enlargement special emphasis is put on energy efficient technologies as well as on promising solar techniques.

The key objectives of the project are:

  • To obtain substantial energy savings on electricity: 40% and heating: 15%, while also improving the indoor climate throughout the hospital.
  • To demonstrate innovative energy saving and solar technologies through building integration and combined controls for PV and solar thermal systems.
  • To ensure an overall high architectural standard, including the integration of green outdoor areas, the Hospital campus and the city of Verona.

To ensure efficient dissemination of the project experience, both locally in the Veneto region as well as in the rest of Italy and Europe.

Innovative initiatives

A pre-feasibility study of the renovation and enlargement of the OCM Verona has identified the following energy efficient elements as optimal for this project.

  • Efficient heat recovery
  • Integration of a building management system for heating and cooling
  • Solar thermal system
  • Highly efficient cooling system
  • Pre-cooling with evacuated solar thermal units
  • Double glass facades
  • Energy efficient windows with intelligent solar control
  • Building integrated PV system

The most efficient and beneficial combination of these measures will be implemented in the renovation and enlargement of the OCM Verona.

Energy balance

At present, prior to the renovation, the OCM Verona has an energy consumption of 70.000 MWh/year. Approximately 50.000 MWh/year for heating and 20.000 MWh/year for electricity.

By introducing the described initiatives the total energy saving is estimated at up to 15.000 MWh/year corresponding to 21% of the present consumption. These savings derive from a 14% reduction of the heating consumption from 50.000 MWh/year to 43.000 MWh/year and a 40% reduction of the electricity demand from 20.000 MWh/year to 12.000 MWh/year.
